Biosafety is an issue that requires constant monitoring and improvement. Most pig farms have successfully established biosecurity protocols, but some enterprises continue to work on their development and implementation. 

Significant changes in the distribution of the pig population have occurred within the EU27 between 2013 and 2023. Countries such as Spain have increased their share significantly, while others such as Germany have seen notable reductions.

An African swine fever (ASF) outbreak was confirmed on a pig farm with about 24,000 pigs in Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do on June 15. This is the fourth farm outbreak in South Korea this year and the first in about a month since the outbreak occurred in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province on May 21.

African swine fever continues to spread in Europe and other parts of the world. Food also plays a role. If unheated feed or leftovers from infected animals are fed to uninfected animals, the virus can spread to previously ASF-free regions and thus to domestic pig herds. As the virus is stable in the environment, it has long been assumed that it can also be transmitted via feed, water and other materials.

The reduced pork production in Brazil can be attributed to slightly weaker domestic demand in 2024.
