As of 1 September 2026, the United States had 74.3 million pigs, down 1.5% from a year earlier. Declines were recorded in both the breeding herd and market hog inventories, according to data from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Compared with 1 June 2026, however, the total pig population increased by 1.6%, from 73.1 million to 74.3 million head.

Of the total, 68.4 million were market hogs, while 5.87 million made up the breeding herd.

Between June and August, US farms weaned 34.5 million piglets, 2% fewer than in the same period last year. At the same time, sow productivity continued to improve: the average number of piglets weaned per litter reached 11.96, compared with 11.82 a year earlier, an increase of 1.2%.

US producers plan to have 2.85 million sows farrow between September and November 2026, and 2.80 million between December 2026 and February 2027.

Iowa had the largest pig population among US states, with 24.7 million head. It was followed by Minnesota with 9.3 million and North Carolina with 7.6 million.
