Annual pork production in Kenya is estimated at between 23,000 and 40,000 tonnes, while projected demand in 2025 stood at around 38,500 tonnes.
Further growth in consumption is expected to create opportunities for production expansion, particularly given the relatively short production cycle in pig farming and the accessibility of the sector to small-scale farmers.
Around 80% of Kenya’s pig population is kept by smallholder producers, meaning they will play a key role in meeting future demand.
At the same time, researchers stress that sustainable growth of the sector will depend on improving production efficiency. Key areas include the use of higher-performing genetics, proper feeding, disease prevention and better farm management.
Improvements in these areas should help increase animal productivity, feed efficiency and herd health while reducing production losses.
