Spanish Pigs Remain Among the Most Expensive in the EU Despite ASF and Market Crisis

Despite African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks, an oversupplied global pork market and falling domestic quotations, pig prices in Spain remain among the highest in the EU. Industry analysts believe that prolonged losses in Germany, Denmark, Belgium and other Central European countries could lead to herd reductions and, over time, create additional opportunities for Spanish producers.

Conditions in the European pork market remain difficult. Producers are facing higher feed costs, particularly for soybeans, high energy expenses, weak global demand and excess supply. African swine fever remains an additional factor affecting Spain.

Mercolleida quotations have been below production costs for several weeks, and analysts do not rule out further declines before Christmas.

However, compared with most other EU countries, the position of Spanish producers remains relatively stronger. The equivalent liveweight prices cited in the analysis are around €1.38/kg in France, €1.17/kg in Spain, €1.08/kg in Belgium, €1.02/kg in Germany, €0.98/kg in the Netherlands and €0.90/kg in Denmark.

Thus, excluding France and Italy, where market conditions have their own particular characteristics, Spain currently has the highest pig price among the EU’s major producers.
