During 2025, China’s pork imports declined by 8.5% year on year to 970,000 tonnes. Imports of pork offal also decreased, though at a slower pace — down 3.3% to 1.19 million tonnes.
Compared with 2020, pork import volumes have dropped by almost 78%, reflecting structural changes in the market following large-scale investments in herd rebuilding and production capacity. Offal imports have also fallen over this period, though less sharply — by around 12%.
Against this backdrop, China’s domestic pork production reached a new record of 59.38 million tonnes in 2025, up 4.1% from the previous year. After a slight downturn in 2024, the sector returned to growth, supported by accelerated slaughtering, herd optimisation and government policies aimed at managing overcapacity.
Analysts note that the combination of record production and declining imports confirms China’s strategic course toward reducing dependence on external suppliers, while maintaining flexibility in balancing the domestic market in line with demand and price conditions.
