At the end of January, prices for live slaughter pigs are rebounding, analysts of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders report, citing the results of the Association’s weekly monitoring of procurement prices.

Trading last Friday ended with an increase in liveweight pork quotations of UAH 2–7 per kg. Most commercial batches this week were purchased at UAH 66–68+ per kg, while price offers around UAH 67 per kg were the most common across all regions of the country. The weighted average market price this week reached UAH 67.3 per kg, which is 9.1% higher than the previous level.

The price recovery is attributed primarily to a noticeable reduction in pressure from carry-over stocks of heavier slaughter-weight animals. Excess batches of live pigs that could not be sold during the holiday period have already left the market, bringing average slaughter weights and, accordingly, overall supply closer to standard levels.

Although only some processors are currently sharing forecasts on future price dynamics, their expectations are unanimous — they anticipate further price recovery. Market operators do not yet observe a revival in market activity; however, in their view, this is in line with seasonal sales patterns. At the same time, most players continue to operate with relatively stable volumes and note that trading conditions remain largely predictable and orderly.
