On July 1, 2022 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in first reading (as a basis) the draft law "On peculiarities of legal protection of geographical indications for agricultural products and foodstuffs, protection of rights and application of quality schemes, including traditional guaranteed features for agricultural products and foodstuffs" (reg. № 5616) submitted by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on June 4, 2021.

The Bill was supported by 297 People's Deputies of Ukraine.

It was drafted in pursuance of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. Its purpose is the implementation of the requirements of EU law in the legislation of Ukraine concerning the proper legal protection of geographical indications for agricultural products and food products during their labeling and sale, the protection of the rights of producers of such products to use geographical names in their name and quality protection of geographically branded products.

The adoption of the law will ensure the exclusive rights of producers to designate, for example, wines as Champagne (France), cherries as Melitopol, cucumbers as Nizhyn (Ukraine), etc.
