According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), all cases are concentrated in only two districts:
- Olpe – 59 cases,
- Siegen-Wittgenstein – 33 cases.
The first case of ASF in North Rhine-Westphalia was recorded in June. Since then, infected zones have been established around the outbreaks, which have not yet had to be expanded. This indicates that the situation is under control.
The dynamics of ASF spread in the region are as follows:
- June – 14 cases,
- July – 53 cases,
- August – 25 cases.
For comparison, in the state of Hesse, located about 100 km to the south (between Frankfurt am Main and Mannheim), the pressure of the disease has begun to subside. While 856 cases were detected here in the first quarter of this year and 700 in the second quarter, only 48 cases were detected in the third quarter (since 1 July).
Experts note that although ASF remains a serious threat to wild and domestic pig populations in Germany, the effectiveness of localisation measures in North Rhine-Westphalia gives cause for cautious optimism.
