Data from customs statistics show that in October imports of fresh, chilled and frozen pigs amounted to 4.38 thousand tons or $9.7 million. This is one and a half times more than a month ago, according to the analytical department of the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine. The key supplier countries remain Poland, the Netherlands and Denmark.
"The activation of importers in October was a typical situation for the past few years and played the role of an additional price regulator during the seasonal weakening of trade activity. The average price of an imported kilo in October was $2.2/kg. The average price per kg imported in October was $2.2/kg, up 6.2% or $0.13/kg over the previous month. USD/kg more expensive than the month before. Thus, high domestic pork prices at the beginning of the month made imports economically justified in the absence of customs/tariff preferences. However, as domestic pork prices fell, the flow of imported products decreased," industry analysts commented.
