The government announced in 2021 that transporting animals overseas, mostly to create herds in trading partners such as China, would be stopped, but farmers would be given two years to give up the lucrative export business.
"Our position on the map means that the route to markets in the northern hemisphere will always be a long one, and that carries inevitable animal welfare concerns," Agriculture Secretary Damien O'Connor said in a statement announcing the end of live exports.
Since 2015, exports of live goods by sea have accounted for about 0.32% of New Zealand's export revenue from the primary sector, which includes agriculture and mining.
The total value of live animal exports in 2022 was NZ$524 million ($322.78 million).
