June: pork in retail again "saves a penny"

The May increase in pork prices did not "stick" in June, so the average prices for chilled pork semi-finished products were on average 1% cheaper than a month earlier. The decline in pork prices in retail chains is evidenced by the results of the monthly monitoring of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders.

In June, chilled pig meat was more affordable for Ukrainians than in late spring. Thus, the average retail price of a kilogram of chilled pork in the first month of summer was 0.9% or 1.8 UAH/kg lower than in May and amounted to 191.9 UAH/kg. However, not all meat parts have fallen in price, analysts of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders state:

"Although average prices for pork declined in June, the price tags of not all semi-finished products reacted in the same way. For example, the shoulder and hip part fell in price the most - by 2.3% and 2.8%, respectively. The change in prices of premium tenderloin and loin was almost imperceptible, as the average price for the month was adjusted by 0.3% or within 1 UAH/kg. On the contrary, the most popular part of the picnic season - the neck - went up by 1.6% in June."

"In addition to a decrease in purchase prices for pork (-10% compared to the average in May), a number of other factors also affect prices at the counter, including additional costs associated with adapting outlets to power outages. According to retailers' suppliers, not all of them were able to adapt to the force majeure circumstances. However, at the end of the month, most market players got used to the new realities and organized their work accordingly," the AUPB adds.

Industry analysts also noted that the decline in pork prices was synchronized with the similar dynamics of chicken prices (-0.8% against the average price in May), while beef added 5%.
