Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea (PED) has returned to the island of Honshu, killing more pigs and losses are mounting. PED has been confirmed in 70 pigs in the Aichi prefecture in the south of Honshu island.

The peak PED was in Chiba prefecture in May and June this year, and losses are estimated to exceed ¥1 billion (more than US$9 million).

Between the first outbreak in October 2013 and the end of August 2014, PED has led to the deaths of 37 million pigs on 817 farms in 38 prefectures of Japan.
