In order to monitor enteric pathogens and their resistance in weaned piglets, a study was conducted at the Research Centre for Biosafety and Environmental Control of Agricultural Resources of the State Agrarian Academy of Ukraine (Biosafety-Centre) at the initiative of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders as part of a joint project with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) "Keeping Animals Healthy in Ukraine".

The study involved 20 Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders enterprises. In total, more than 300 rectal swabs from piglets with signs of intestinal pathology were collected and examined. Laboratory analysis of the samples revealed E. coli and rotavirus type A in 70% and 30% of cases, respectively. Antibiotic susceptibility testing of E. coli showed a high level of resistance, especially to chlortetracycline and tetracycline.

The most common pathogens that induce enterocolitis in weaned piglets are viruses from the families Coronaviridae and Reoviridae. Despite control and prevention measures, these diseases are systematically recorded on pig farms in Ukraine and Europe.

In addition, the project "Keeping Animals Healthy in Ukraine" is currently implementing laboratory monitoring of pathogens common in pig herds of 50 pig farms.

The Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders is a non-profit, voluntary organization founded by domestic pork producers. The main goals of the association are to represent and protect the rights and interests of the association's farms, promote the development and implementation of new technologies for efficient pork production, expand sales markets, and protect the domestic market.
