The U.N. World Food Program estimates that more than 345 million people are suffering or at risk of severe food shortages, more than double the number in 2019.
Food shortages and high prices are hurting Africa, Asia, and the Americas badly. U.S. officials are especially concerned about Afghanistan and Yemen, which have been devastated by war. Egypt, Lebanon, and other major food-importing countries are finding it difficult to pay their debts and other expenses because of soaring costs. Even in wealthy countries like the United States and Britain, skyrocketing inflation, caused in part by the war, has left the poorest people without food.
