According to January 1 porcine census, the total pig population in Denmark stood at 12.7 million head, which means an increase of 1.6% compared to October 2014, and of 2.5% over the same period last year.
The increase is due mainly to the weaned piglets (less than 50 kg), which grew by 7% (5.7 million).
The number of sows has also increased slightly (1%) over the same period last year, reaching 1,046,000 heads.
Denmark continues to export a large number of live pigs, predominantly piglets. A total of 11.3 million live pigs were exported in 2011, of which 96% were piglets, while in Denmark 18.9 million were slaughtered. In 2013, 10.1 million pigs were exported. Their main destinations were Germany and Poland.
