The approximately $20 million facility is planned to be built in Wimaum, a rural area in Hillsborough County.
Robert Gilbert, dean of the research division known as UF/IFAS, said the facility will be part of an effort to make UF/IFAS a "recognized leader" in the application of artificial intelligence to agriculture.
"The facility and its associated faculty will develop programs in robotics, precision agriculture, and plant breeding that will accelerate agricultural technology not only for our strawberry and tomato industries in the region, but for many agricultural enterprises throughout the state," Gilbert said.
