The UK pig industry has presented a new Environmental Roadmap for 2026–2030, outlining the key priorities for the sector’s sustainable development over the coming years. The initiative was developed by the industry with the support of AHDB, the leading body of the British agri-food sector.
According to the document, between 2008 and 2023 the British pig sector reduced its carbon footprint by 18%. In addition, emissions related to land use and land-use change declined by 71%. These results were achieved through improvements in feed formulation, enhanced feed efficiency, and innovation implemented across the entire supply chain.
The new strategy identifies seven key focus areas through 2030:
- reducing carbon emissions;
- improving air quality;
- water resource management;
- manure and nutrient management;
- biodiversity conservation;
- waste management and recycling;
- improving farm energy efficiency.
The roadmap also предусматриes performance assessments every five years using life cycle analysis. This approach is intended to ensure transparency, continuous monitoring, and ongoing adjustment of environmental performance indicators.
Industry representatives emphasize that sustainability and environmental impact reduction are becoming some of the key strategic priorities for the global meat sector. The new approaches are expected to support the development of more efficient, responsible, and competitive production models.
Thus, the British pig industry continues integrating environmental principles into production, focusing on long-term sustainability and responding to modern climate challenges.
