Poland confirmed its third African swine fever (ASF) outbreak of 2026 on a commercial pig farm on 22 July. The virus was detected at a farm with more than 3,000 pigs in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, only around 2 km from another holding where ASF had been confirmed two weeks earlier. Thus, the number of outbreaks in commercial herds has tripled since the first case was reported in May.

According to the Swine Health Information Center (SHIC), Poland’s third commercial ASF outbreak this year was confirmed on 22 July in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. The affected farm housed more than 3,000 pigs.

The proximity of the new outbreak to the previous one is of particular concern: the farm is located around 2 km from a holding where ASF was confirmed on 9 July.

Second Outbreak Affected a Farm with 774 Pigs

The 9 July outbreak was detected in the village of Czapelki on a farm housing 774 pigs.

The holding was already located within an existing EU restricted zone. Polish veterinary authorities reported that 60 finishing pigs had already been sent to slaughter during the monitoring period before the outbreak was officially confirmed.

Following laboratory confirmation of ASF, protection and surveillance zones were established around the outbreak.

These zones covered 51 pig holdings with a total population of around 42,000 pigs.

The detection of another infected holding only a few kilometres away highlights the need for intensified disease surveillance and control in the region.

First Outbreak of the Year Occurred on a Farm with More Than 21,000 Pigs

Poland’s first ASF outbreak in commercial pig production in 2026 was confirmed in May.

The virus was detected at a large farm in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, where more than 21,000 pigs were kept.

Thus, within just a few months, the country went from one commercial outbreak to three, with the two latest cases forming a local cluster in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

ASF Outbreaks in Domestic Pigs Are Increasing Across Europe

The new cases in Poland are part of a broader trend of increasing ASF activity in domestic pigs across Europe.

According to the EU’s Animal Disease Information System (ADIS), seven European countries reported 186 ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs in July.

By comparison, 164 outbreaks were recorded in June. The monthly total therefore increased slightly.

At the same time, the virus continues to circulate widely among wild boar.

In July, Poland reported 100 ASF cases in wild boar, the second-highest figure in Europe after Italy.

The combination of a high number of cases in wildlife and the emergence of new outbreaks on commercial farms remains one of the key risks facing Poland’s pig sector in 2026.
