World’s pork prices: major markets analysis

In February the FAO Meat Price Index averaged rose up by 1.7 points (1.1%) to 160.6 points compared to January, 2017. It is reported by Analytical Department of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) on the FAO Price Index submissions.

The main change factors were prices on ovine and bovine meat. In Australia, quotations climbed as herd rebuilding reduced availability of bovine meat. Meanwhile, the ending of the seasonal slaughter peak for ovine meat in Oceania impinged on supply and triggered a price increase. FAO experts estimate that pig and poultry meat markets, however, remained well-balanced during the last winter month.

Іn most EU countries, market pork prices were characterized by low volatility during February. Although at the beginning of month price rise was caused by a limited supply due to cold weather conditions. However, for most Commonwealth countries it was situational changes. Upward trend was saved only in Southern Europe, to be exact in France, Spain and Portugal. In other countries prices were stabilized till the end of February.

Under the influence of seasonal drawdown offer, prices were changing in the context of vibrant domestic demand and intensified raw materials competition between processors in North America. Average February price index exceeded January one by 16% and was comparable to European quotations. Although in the second half of the month there has been some price weakening for US pork. Canada, which traditionally moves in one price direction with US showed 18% plus and reached 1.35. USA/kg. in February compared to the previous month. However, pork prices dropped slightly in the third week of the month.

As Chinise New Year celebrations came to its end, pork prices  gradually went down in China.

In Russia live pigs purchase prices jumped up during the first half of February. Nevertheless, there has been some quotation weakening as winter comes to its end consequently, Sunday Great Fast is just around the corner. As a result, the February average price on pigs mature for slaughter was by 1.5% lower than in January.

The strongest decline suffered pork price in Chile, where most of the month, quotation fluctuated within 1,24-1,25 USA/kg. Even though quotes added 2 cents/kg at the turn of seasons, they remain significantly below the January price index of 1,41-1,56 USA/kg.

Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders — is a non-profit, voluntary organization. Established in July 14-th, 2011. At present, AUPB unites 35 farms, breeding stock of which amounts to 35% of the national volume. The main objective of the Association is to protect rights and interests of pig enterprises, achieve international standards of production due to implementation of modern technologies.
