During 2022, Moldova notified an increased number of outbreaks of ASF in domestic pigs (from 2 in 2021 to 15 outbreaks in 2022), including an outbreak on the largest commercial farm.
The FAO team of experts, which included Vitaliy Bashynsky, Senior Veterinary and Animal Health Specialist, and Oleksandr Revnivtsev, Animal Health and Transboundary Diseases Expert, focused on demonstrating and practicing response measures to an ASF outbreak on a pig farm and implementing ASF control measures in wild fauna. Given the critical importance of farm biosecurity in preventing the virus from entering the farm, Mr. Bashynskyi conducted a one-day biosecurity training, sharing best practices from leading Ukrainian pig producers.
Around 50 participants were trained over the course of the four session days. The audience was most interested in the issues of restoring pig farms after a stamping out (elimination of livestock due to the ASFoutbreak), protocols for cleaning and disinfecting production facilities, principles of conducting an anti-epizootic investigation, etc.

The main goals of the association are to represent and protect the rights and interests of the association's farms, promote the development and implementation of new technologies for efficient pork production, expand sales markets, and protect the domestic market.
During 2021-2023, FAO and the EBRD are implementing the program "Animal Health, Food Safety and Quality Assurance Programs in Ukraine and Moldova". The main components of the program are (i) improving the control of the epizootic situation, with a focus on transboundary animal diseases, in particular African swine fever; (ii) reducing the risks of antibiotic resistance; and (iii) establishing agricultural production and supply chains in the context of the war in Ukraine.
