An indefinite ban on the sale of pork and pork products has been imposed in the Moran area of India’s Assam state after 10 tissue samples collected from local markets tested positive for African swine fever (ASF). The restrictions also cover the movement of pigs and pig products between areas.

The order was issued by the Dibrugarh district administration on 25 October following a report from the district veterinary service.

The samples were collected from various daily and weekly markets within the Moran Revenue Circle and tested at the North Eastern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Guwahati.

All shops selling pork and related products must remain closed until further notice. The movement of pigs and pig products into and out of other areas has also been prohibited.

The restrictions were introduced as a preventive measure to contain further spread of ASF. They will remain in force until a separate decision is issued by the local administration.

The authorities also warned that violations may result in penalties under applicable legislation. Relevant agencies have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement of the restrictions and strengthen public awareness of the control measures.
