In 2025, Spain imported 4.78 million live pigs, up 12% year-on-year. The Netherlands remained the main supplier, while Belgium, Portugal and France played a key role in the segment of animals imported for slaughter.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, the country imported 4,778,354 live pigs in 2025, which is 12% more than in 2024. Compared to 2020, import volumes have increased by more than 72% — from 2.78 million to 4.78 million head.

The largest share of imports in 2025 consisted of animals for rearing — 3,935,587 head, or 82.37% of total imports. Another 781,622 head (16.35%) were imported for slaughter, while 61,145 head fell into other categories (including breeding stock).

By country of origin, the largest suppliers of live pigs to Spain in 2025 were:

  • The Netherlands — 62.90% of total imports
  • Belgium — 17.97%
  • Portugal — 9.60%
  • France — 4.07%
  • Denmark — 4.05%
  • Germany — 1.13%

At the same time, the structure of imports differed depending on the animals’ intended use. In the category of pigs for slaughter, the main suppliers were Belgium (48.1%), Portugal (25.9%), and France (19.2%). Meanwhile, in the segment of piglets for rearing, the Netherlands dominates (75.3%), with Belgium (12.3%) ranking second.

Analysts also point to the potential impact of the epizootic situation: on November 28, Spain confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF). For this reason, import dynamics in December were reviewed, but experts emphasize that these data should be interpreted with caution, as they may not yet reflect the real impact of ASF on animal movements and could also be partly influenced by seasonal patterns. Nevertheless, December already showed declines in import volumes greater than those typically seen for that month.
