During the first 3 months of 2017, pork production in the EU has reached 5.91 million tonnes (-19,700 tonnes; −0.33% with respect to the same period in 2016). This slight drop is due to the fact that several of the most important producing countries have reduced their production, among them the UK (-10%), Italy (-4.5%), Belgium (-4-3%), Poland (-2.7%), Denmark (-1.8%) and Germany (-0.8%).
Faced with the slight quarterly German decrease (1.37 million tonnes), Spain is getting closer and closer to the first position as European producer, with 1.13 million tonnes of pork produced in the first trimester of 2017 (+2.8%). Together with Spain, France’s production also increased significantly (+42.300 tonnes, +8.3%), becoming the third pork producing country and displacing Poland to the fourth position.
Another important datum be highlighted is the USA’s production, that has established a new record in the first trimester of 2017, with 2.9 million tonnes, that entail 81,300 tonnes more than in the same period in 2016.
