Last week, the Romanian veterinary authorities reported the presence of African swine fever virus (ASF) on a commercial farm of 39,191 pigs, located in Parța, Timiș County and belonging to SC SMF Romania SRL.
Immediately after the notification of the suspicion by the Veterinary Health and Food Safety Directorate of Timiș, the veterinary services intervened and placed the farm under official surveillance.
Protection and surveillance areas were approved surrounding the outbreak, restrictive measures were imposed for the movement of people, animals, products, by-products, and means of transport. All animals on the farm will be culled and the resulting by-products together with feed residues, bedding, and everything that could constitute a source of infection will be destroyed by neutralization, according to legal provisions, to avoid any risk of spreading the virus. Subsequently, the entire surface of the farm will be disinfected.
A protection zone with a radius of 3 km and a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 km have been defined surrounding the outbreak. In these zones, restrictions will be maintained for a minimum of 30 days.
