For the first nine months of 2014, Italy imported more pig meat than in the same period of 2013, continuing the trend from the year before.

The total volume of fresh and frozen pig meat imported by Italy for the period January to September 2014 was 763 thous. tonnes, which is nine per cent higher than the same period the year before, according to the German meat association, VDF.

Germany was again the main source of the Italian imports, accounting 270,700 tonnes or a little over 35% of the total. This was 12% or around 29 thous. tonnes more than in 2013.

Other coutnries delivering pig meat to Italy over the period were the Netherlands (114,300 tonnes; +9.3%), Spain (94,500 tonnes; +5.5%), France (87,400 tonnes; +5.7%) and Denmark (77,300 tonnes; +9.5%).
