Livestock market: seasonality prevails

With the completion of the winter holidays, the prices on the domestic pork market "submitted" to the usual seasonal trends, according to the analytical department of the Association of Ukranian Pig Breeders.

After the winter holidays the prices of pigs of slaughter conditions traditionally weakened: with a decrease in consumer activity in the second decade of the month, the corresponding changes were undergone by the prices of pork live weight purchases. In addition, in the second half of January the regional divergence of prices became more typical. Thus, during previous trades the cuttings were mainly sold at UAH 61-63 per kg in the Center, while the prices in the East and West regions were close to UAH 60 per kg.

Representatives of meat processors say that the weakening of trading activity after winter holidays is traditional, and its rate is in line with expectations. At the same time, the operators point to the intensification of domestic competition between suppliers of chilled pork, which increases the pressure on prices in this segment and, consequently, on the purchasing prices. Despite the negative price dynamics of the last two weeks, most pork producers noted that sales of commercial batches are proceeding as planned — without refusals, postponements and/or revision of purchase prices in the middle of the week, and some live stock suppliers enter the market with smaller commercial batches.

The results of the weekly monitoring of the procurement prices of processors can be found in this section.
