The Danish government is introducing a temporary ban on the establishment of new conventional pig farms and the expansion of existing ones. The restriction will remain in place until new framework conditions for the future of pig production have been established, with the aim of ensuring higher animal welfare standards and greater value creation within Denmark.

The new rules are intended to ensure that no new conventional pig farms are established and that the production capacity of existing farms is not increased until the future model for the sector has been finalised.

The future framework conditions are expected to be discussed within the so-called “pig sector quadripartite dialogue”.

At the same time, the ban specifically targets production expansion. Farms will still be able to obtain approval for changes that improve animal welfare, climate performance or environmental outcomes, provided that these changes do not increase production capacity or the size of the production area.

Applications submitted before the new rules came into force will be assessed under the previous procedure. In such cases, municipalities must evaluate the potential impact of projects on the environment, nature and landscape, as well as odour, noise and transport pressure.
