As published in the Argentinian newspaper Clarín, pork consumption has rocketed in the last years, and the record of 17,1 kg per inhabitant and year has been beaten recently, according to the last report by the Argentinian Pig Producers’ Association. This growth is partly due to the differences in prices between beef and pork, and to the slight increase in the price of pork during the last six months (by 5.2%), well below inflation (11.8%).

Although the national production between January and June 2017 has reached 330,720 tonnes (+7%) and is heading towards a new record (in 2016 production exceeded 500,000 tonnes for the first time), pork imports, that have reached 37,000 tonnes in the first semester, entail an increase by 79.4% in comparison with the same period in 2016 and 11% of the total supply.

Most of the imported pork products are cold cuts, hams, shoulders and bondiola from Brazil mainly.
