The German Federal Government has extended the transition period for implementing the regulation on mandatory meat labelling according to the type of animal husbandry. Originally set to take effect on August 1, 2025, the new enforcement date is now March 1, 2026. This extension provides additional time for federal states and food business operators to prepare for the changes.

The labelling system distinguishes between five types of animal housing:

  • standard pen,
  • pen with increased space,
  • open-air pen,
  • open-air production,
  • organic production.

Initially, the regulation will apply only to fresh pork produced in Germany, both packaged and unpackaged, and sold in supermarkets, butcher shops, and online platforms.

Labelling meat from foreign producers will remain voluntary under the current framework.
