Over the year, the pig population in France continued to decline (–0.6%), with the number of breeding sows decreasing by 2.5%. At the same time, slaughter volumes increased slightly, supported by higher average carcass weights, which partially offset the reduction in herd size.
Price dynamics in the European market were volatile in 2025, influenced by weakening global demand, reduced purchases from China, tariffs imposed by this country, and the spread of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain. These factors put downward pressure on prices.
Domestic pork consumption in France grew faster than production: consumption increased by 2.7%, while production rose by only 0.8%. As a result, the self-sufficiency rate fell below 100% for the first time in recent years.
Despite the overall positive trade balance, the situation in the fresh pork segment deteriorated due to declining exports. Meanwhile, the deficit in processed pork products and cured meats remains a concern for the sector.
Analysts note that future market stability will depend on the recovery of external demand and the ability of producers to adapt to new market conditions.
