Police in Chongqing have detained eight people for allegedly processsing bacon illegally to sell, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The police raided four sites hidden in a market in the municipality's Shapingba district where the illegal pork was being processed. Over 10 tonnes of bacon was seized, worth approximately 500,000 yuan (US$80,200).
The sites were operating after the hours of 6pm without a license or health certificate.
According to the police, one suspect admitted they added Sudan Red, a blacklisted additive harmful to human health, to give the bacon a better appearance.
