Following an open tender, contracts have been signed with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health and Biogénesis Bagó SA to supply various types of vaccines and build up stocks. This decision complements Canada's current access to vaccines through the North American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Bank and will ensure rapid response readiness in the event of an outbreak.
The creation of the bank is part of a nationwide strategy for prevention and emergency preparedness in animal husbandry. The availability of vaccine stocks will make it possible to quickly localise possible outbreaks, reduce the number of infected animals and shorten the duration of epizootics.
The Canadian government emphasises the importance of cooperation between federal, provincial and territorial authorities, as well as industry stakeholders. Together with existing import restrictions, biosecurity on farms and animal health monitoring systems, the new vaccine bank will help protect animals, the agricultural economy and farming communities in Canada.
