The Association of Ukranian Pig Breeders, with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as part of the Ensuring Animal Health in Ukraine project, has completed a survey of private and state hunting compacts in each region to assess the risks of the spread of swine disease in wildlife.

95% of the surveyed hunting agreements have not recorded any cases of African swine fever (ASF) since the beginning of the war. A positive outcome is also that 75% of the professionals who became participants in the study understand that visual assessment is not enough to establish a diagnosis - laboratory proof is mandatory.

In terms of feral hog disease control, it is important that more than 90% of the surveyed hunters have dedicated locations rather than dismembering carcasses and disposing of by-products at the point of extraction of the animal. At the same time, less than half of them have fencing and are suitable for disinfection, which means modernization is needed. Relatively low, just over 30% of hunting grounds have a refrigerated chamber, which allows them to overstay the carcass until the results of laboratory testing, as required by domestic law.

A more in-depth analysis of the data and related recommendations for controlling swine diseases in wildlife can be found in the study report.

"I would like to thank the hunting representatives who responded to the request to take the survey at such a difficult time for all of us. The survey showed that the war has significantly affected the work of hunting farms, while the desire to preserve and increase the number of wild animals, despite the difficulties with the lack of employees and the decrease in financial revenues, remains unchanged", comments the head of the survey Alexander Revnivtsev.
