Between January and June 2025, Spain imported more than 1.5 million piglets from the Netherlands, marking a 27% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This is the highest volume recorded in the past decade, reinforcing a steady upward trend interrupted only in 2019 and 2020.

Since 2016, the number of Dutch piglets imported by Spain has grown more than thirteenfold — from 114,111 head to nearly 1.5 million in 2025. This surge highlights Spain’s strong and growing demand for animals destined for fattening.

There has also been a notable rise in imports of slaughter pigs. In the first half of 2025, 31,930 pigs were brought in, up 50.6% compared to the same period in 2024. While the figure still falls short of the 2022 peak (over 52,000 head), this renewed growth suggests a potential recovery following declines in 2023 and 2024.

Overall, the flow of live pigs between the Netherlands and Spain continues to solidify as a key axis of the European swine trade, reflecting deepening integration and interdependence in the region’s pork production and supply chain.
