During July 2022-January 2023, the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) supported the restoration of sustainable pork market operators in war conditions.

AUPB helped rebuild supply chains for domestic producers and processors as part of a joint project between the Ukrainian Agrarian Council (UAC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), «Supporting Small and Medium-Sized Farmers and SMEs to Address Supply Chain Disruptions Caused by War». UAC, AUPB and AMP worked with FAO for seven months to help farmers gain access to the necessary inputs and ensure uninterrupted marketing by widening the circle of counterparties.

Thus, under the project, 17 pig farms from partially occupied, de-occupied or close to the fighting regions received humanitarian aid (veterinary drugs, insemination products, feed ingredients) worth 9.5 million hryvnias in total.

«Another priority was the redirection of commodity flows of pig breeding products (piglets, slaughter pigs, chilled half-carcasses). Because of this, several dozen producers of pigs found new sales channels, which sold products worth more than 30 million hryvnia. AUPB helped domestic producers not only to orient in the price conjuncture of the market, but also to build new connections with direct suppliers of critical production resources from feed ingredients to genetics, which during seven months supplied more than 700 million USD worth of products,» — Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders commented.

Representatives of the industry association note that such results were possible due to close contact with all pork market players: «During the period of the grant, AUPB conducted more than 750 interviews with pig producers and more than 300 interviews with meat processors to identify needs and key barriers to accessing inputs, selling products and other challenges caused by the war. This not only provided operators with the information they needed — more than 1,200 consultations — but also helped address key issues.

In order to normalize the pork market and help reintegrate producers in the newly liberated territories, the AUPB also has strategic areas of work. For example, the Association is making efforts to open the EU market for domestic pork and pork products in cooperation with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the State Food Service and potential exporting enterprises.

The Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders  is a non-profit, voluntary organization founded by domestic pork producers. The main purposes of the association are representation and protection of rights and interests of farms of the association, assistance in development and introduction of new technologies for efficient production of pork, expansion of sales markets, and protection of domestic sales market.
