A second case of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The first case in the region was recorded in August 2024, when the virus was detected in a sick wild boar that was shot near Hemsbach (Rhine-Neckar district).

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI), Germany’s national reference laboratory for ASF, has confirmed the presence of the virus genome in a second wild boar. The initial analysis was conducted by the Office for Chemical and Veterinary Analyses in Karlsruhe. The infected animal was found dead north of the A6 freeway near Mannheim.

Authorities report that this new case is part of a broader ASF outbreak affecting the Lampertheim area in Hesse for several weeks and is therefore not an isolated incident.

So far, pig farms in Baden-Württemberg remain unaffected by the ASF virus. Minister of Food, Rural Space, and Consumer Protection Peter Hauk emphasized the importance of strict biosecurity measures on pig farms to prevent further spread of the disease.
