The virus has been confirmed on three farms: one with 34 pigs, another with 1,660, and a third with approximately 10,000 animals. The first farm was already located within a protection zone, but the new outbreaks indicate that the disease continues to spread.
Official data show that since the detection of ASF in 2023, more than 39,000 pigs have already been culled in Croatia. With the latest cases, the total number of pigs lost will exceed 50,000, representing over 5% of the national herd.
The Croatian government has introduced enhanced biosecurity measures, deploying both the army and police to help contain the outbreak. Security forces are guarding farms and border crossings, inspecting vehicles, and preventing the illegal transport of meat and live animals from restricted areas.
Experts warn that the continued spread of ASF could deal a serious blow to Croatia’s pig industry, which has already suffered significant losses from previous outbreaks. Authorities are urging farmers to strictly comply with veterinary and sanitary requirements to prevent further infections.
