Yesterday, 4 December, the second online session of a series of events on biosecurity and the fight against antimicrobial resistance in pig production was successfully held. The event, organised by the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders with the support of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), brought together leading industry experts and more than three hundred participants.

The session focused on key issues of transport biosecurity, transmission of resistant strains and disinfection. Vitaliy Bashynsky, an international expert on biosecurity in livestock and food safety, spoke about the importance of biosecurity during transport. The speaker focused on the risks of infection during transportation and shared effective strategies to avoid them.

Oleksandr Revnivtsev, an expert on the health of productive animals and transboundary diseases, highlighted the transmission of resistant strains:

‘Livestock keepers can become infected with resistant bacteria through direct contact with animals and their faeces or through the external environment of the farm (e.g. dust). Farmers themselves can also transmit resistant bacteria directly to their animals and family members. For example, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria from farm animals were first detected in Northern Europe in pig farmers and their families. Later, they were found in a wider range of people, which was most likely the result of human-to-human contact and the transmission of bacteria through the environment (dust).’

In his presentation, Vitaliy Bashynsky also reviewed antimicrobials banned in Ukraine, emphasised the need to comply with the regulatory framework and stressed the importance of proper regulation of antibiotic use in livestock.

Vitaliy Sokolov, an expert in the field of productive animal health, concluded the session with practical advice on disinfection.  He gave recommendations on modern means and methods that ensure maximum efficiency and safety for animals.

The next session is scheduled for 11 December and will focus on strengthening staff biosafety and reducing resistance in pig production.
