Sri Lanka has reported its first cases of African Swine Fever (ASF), leading authorities to suspend the transport of pigs across district divisions. Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health, confirmed the outbreak and stated that an official gazette notification is being prepared.
Nearly a thousand pigs have died due to the virus over the past few days, with cases reported in all provinces except the Northern Province. As a preventive measure, healthy animals have been vaccinated.
Dr. Kothalawala also advised against consuming meat from pigs that succumbed to the viral disease.
