Spain and China have strengthened their cooperation in the agri-food sector by signing three new protocols covering the pork and fishing industries. The documents were signed during the state visit of the King and Queen of Spain to China and open additional trade opportunities for the pork, fisheries, and aquaculture sectors.

The most significant of the signed documents is the protocol on African swine fever (ASF) regionalization, which enters into force immediately upon signature. The agreement defines the principles of zoning and compartmentalization mutually recognized by both countries and represents a key step in sanitary control and trade regulation in the event of ASF outbreaks.

Thanks to this protocol, if an ASF outbreak is detected in a particular region of Spain, exports will be suspended only from the affected area, while shipments from regions declared “free” of the disease will continue without restrictions. This approach ensures the continuity of international trade and protects the economic stability of the industry.

Spain’s pork sector holds a strategic position on the global market due to its production capacity, high product quality, and strong export potential. In 2024, Spain exported 540,000 tons of pork to China, valued at more than €1.097 billion, making China the leading destination for Spanish pork exports.
