South Korea has recorded its eighth African swine fever (ASF) case since the beginning of the year. The new outbreak was detected at a pig farm in Pocheon, north of Seoul.

On Saturday, South Korea confirmed its eighth ASF case of 2026, according to national disaster response authorities.

The virus was detected at a pig farm in the Pocheon area, located north of the capital, Seoul. The farm houses about 8,800 pigs. According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, the affected herd will be culled to prevent further spread of the disease.

At the same time, authorities do not plan to impose a nationwide standstill on pig movements or farm operations, limiting measures to local controls.

The country’s first ASF case of 2026 was confirmed earlier this month in Gangneung. Additional outbreaks were later recorded in Anseong and Pocheon in Gyeonggi Province.

African swine fever does not pose a risk to humans but is highly contagious and fatal to pigs and wild boar. There is currently no effective vaccine or treatment for ASF.
