On May 2, 2025, Slovakia's National Reference Laboratory in Zvolen confirmed an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) on a commercial pig farm located in the cadastral area of Dolné Semerovce, Levice district. This marks the first confirmed case of ASF in domestic pigs in the country in 2025.

The affected farm, registered as CEHZ 219375, housed a total of 18,458 pigs. The first clinical signs—fever, lethargy, and diarrhea—were observed on May 1.

Following confirmation of the outbreak, the State Veterinary and Food Administration of Slovakia (SR SVPS) implemented strict control measures, including a complete ban on the movement of animals to and from the premises. A 3-km protection zone and a 10-km surveillance zone were established, covering several localities in the Levice and Krupina districts.

Depopulation of the entire farm was planned and initiated on May 5. Additional restrictions were imposed on the movement of other animal species, pig products, meat, semen, ova, embryos, feed, tools, and waste that could transmit the virus—except with express authorization from SR SVPS. Active surveillance continues in the affected zones.

Since ASF was first detected in Slovakia on July 25, 2019, the country has reported a total of 45 outbreaks in domestic pigs (11 in 2019, 17 in 2020, 11 in 2021, 5 in 2022, and 1 in 2024) and 3,444 outbreaks in wild boar (including 110 cases in 2025 as of this report).
