Poland has officially lifted the highest-level restriction zone related to African swine fever (ASF), the so-called “red zone.” The changes came into force as part of the updated EU regionalisation framework, although disease control and biosecurity measures remain in place across the country.

Poland’s Chief Veterinary Officer announced significant changes to ASF regionalisation introduced under European Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/280 of February 2, 2026, which amended the rules governing ASF control measures within the European Union.

As of January 28, 2026, following a request from the Polish veterinary authority, areas under Level III restrictions (the ASF red zone) in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship were abolished. The affected areas included the counties of Gryfice, Kołobrzeg, Goleniów, Stargard, and Łobez. As a result, Poland currently has no zones under the highest level of ASF restrictions.

At the same time, Level I and Level II zones — areas under surveillance and partial restrictions — remain in force in accordance with both national and EU legislation. This means that measures such as controls on pig movements, strict biosecurity requirements, and monitoring and management of wild boar populations will continue in certain regions of the country.

According to data from Polish veterinary authorities and EU ASF statistics as of February 2, 2026, the ASF virus continues to circulate in the environment. Therefore, sanitary restrictions and surveillance of wild boar remain key elements of disease control both in Poland and across other EU member states.
