Germany lacks veterinarians in agriculture

There is currently a shortage of veterinarians in Germany. Of the approximately 22,000 veterinarians currently practicing in Germany (including around 12,000 practice owners and 10,000 salaried veterinarians), only around 3,500 are still treating farm animals.

The reasons for this are varied. Apart from the desire to be closer to the city and the work-life balance, working conditions, which are partly still difficult, as well as insufficiently effective selection processes for veterinary students also play a role among the younger generation. Constantly increasing legal requirements and related bureaucracy further aggravate the situation.
