France has stated that the current version of the trade agreement between the European Union and the South American Mercosur bloc is unacceptable. Reuters reports this, citing an official French government spokesperson.

Paris insists that the European Commission must urgently present measures on so-called mirror clauses — provisions that require imported agricultural products to meet the same environmental and production standards applied within the EU.

“We expect the European Commission to present proposals on these provisions as soon as possible,” the government spokesperson said following the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by President Emmanuel Macron.

France has long been among the most vocal critics of the EU–Mercosur agreement, arguing that it could harm European farmers and create unfair competition if Mercosur countries do not commit to equivalent standards on environmental protection, food safety, and animal welfare.

Negotiations on the agreement are ongoing, but France’s stance may complicate its approval by EU member states in the near future.
