The additional zone was introduced as an extra layer of protection against the further spread of ASF. It covers areas in the municipalities of Lappeenranta, Luumäki, Kouvola, Loviisa and Lapinjärvi.
At the same time, the Finnish Food Authority amended the rules already in force within the designated infected zone, particularly those concerning hunting and keeping dogs off leash.
Wild Boar Hunting Permitted and Encouraged
Wild boar hunting is permitted and encouraged within the additional restricted zone.
However, samples must be collected from every hunted wild boar and submitted to the Finnish Food Authority’s laboratory for ASF testing.
The movement of wild boar carcasses, fresh meat, meat products and other products derived from wild boar is prohibited both within the zone and outside it.
Export of Live Pigs Abroad Prohibited
Live pigs may not be moved from the buffer zone outside Finland. At the same time, no restrictions have been imposed on their movement within the country.
Pig farms located within the additional zone must ensure that both direct and indirect contact between domestic pigs and wild boar is effectively prevented.
The measures are intended to reduce the risk of the virus spreading from the infected area and strengthen the protection of pig farms in neighbouring regions.
