Catalonia has recorded two additional cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar. Since the beginning of the outbreak, the total number of infected animals in the region has risen to 344, while authorities continue to strengthen disease containment measures.

The Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Catalonia reported the detection of two new cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild boar during the past week.

Both positive cases were identified within the area classified as a maximum-risk zone. One infected wild boar was found in the municipality of Sant Just Desvern, while the other was detected in Castellbisbal, both located in the province of Barcelona.

According to the department, 569 samples were analysed over the last seven days. Laboratory testing confirmed two positive cases, representing a positivity rate of 0.4%.

As a result, the total number of wild boar confirmed to be infected with the ASF virus since the beginning of the outbreak has reached 344 animals.

To contain the spread of the disease, authorities continue to implement a comprehensive package of disease-control measures. Currently, 19 municipalities are included within the high-risk zone.

Within this area, 57 individual traps and 60 collective “Pig Brig” traps have been installed to control wild boar populations. In addition, 351 perimeter fences have been established to restrict animal movements and help contain infection hotspots.

Earlier, the Government of Catalonia extended the restrictions in the high-risk area at least until the end of summer. Regional authorities emphasise that maintaining strict control measures is essential for further containment and eventual eradication of the disease.

African swine fever poses no risk to human health, but it causes significant economic losses to the pig sector due to high mortality rates, trade restrictions, and the costs associated with disease-control measures.
