A new case of African swine fever (ASF) has been recorded in Vinnytsia region, with experts warning of increasing risks of disease spread via wild fauna.

At the end of last week, 11 dead wild boars were found in hunting grounds in Mohyliv-Podilskyi district of Vinnytsia region, all of which tested positive for ASF. This was reported by the Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection and Chief State Veterinary Inspector of Ukraine, Volodymyr Kusturov.

According to him, this is already the sixth ASF case in wild fauna since the beginning of 2026. Previous outbreaks were recorded in Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zakarpattia regions.

The State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection emphasizes that wild boars remain a natural reservoir of the virus and a key source of infection for domestic pigs. Under martial law, when population control of wild animals is limited, the risks of disease spread increase significantly.

An excessive wild boar population contributes to the formation of persistent ASF hotspots: infected carcasses can contaminate the environment for extended periods, while the movement of wild animals closer to settlements and agricultural areas creates direct transmission pathways. Additional risks arise from potential contamination of feed resources.

The Service urges hunting ground users to intensify monitoring of forest areas for the timely detection of dead animals, avoid supplementary feeding of wild boars in risk zones, and strictly adhere to biosecurity requirements. The movement of carcasses or related products is permitted only after obtaining negative laboratory test results for ASF.

Citizens who encounter wild boar carcasses are advised not to approach them, to record the location, and to immediately report the finding to the relevant authorities or local administration.

Owners of pigs in private households are advised to prevent any contact between domestic animals and wildlife, carry out regular disinfection, and avoid the use of untreated feed.

“Only joint and responsible actions will make it possible to contain the spread of ASF and protect the pig sector in Ukraine,” emphasized Volodymyr Kusturov.
