In 2024, Poland reported 44 outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in domestic pigs and 2,311 cases in wild boar, according to the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate.

ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs were recorded in 7 out of 16 provinces:

  • Lubelskie: 2 outbreaks
  • Warmińsko-Mazurskie: 7 outbreaks
  • Zachodniopomorskie: 6 outbreaks
  • Wielkopolskie: 23 outbreaks
  • Mazowieckie: 1 outbreak
  • Pomorskie: 2 outbreaks
  • Kujawsko-Pomorskie: 3 outbreaks

This marks an increase of 14 outbreaks compared to 2023. While ASF was detected in the Lower Silesian province in 2023, there were no cases in the Pomeranian and Kuyavian-Pomeranian provinces that year.

Among wild boar, 2,311 cases were reported, leaving only three provinces free of ASF: Łódzkie, Śląskie, and Małopolskie. The highest numbers of wild boar cases were recorded in:

  • Pomorskie: 494 cases
  • Wielkopolskie: 387 cases
  • Zachodniopomorskie: 352 cases

Compared to the previous year, the total number of wild boar cases decreased slightly from 2,686 in 2023.

The increase in ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs highlights the need for enhanced biosecurity measures, stronger disease containment strategies, and continuous monitoring of the wild boar population. African Swine Fever remains a significant challenge for Poland’s swine industry, requiring coordinated efforts from veterinary authorities and farmers to mitigate its impact.
