In the first ten days of January, prices for slaughter-weight live pigs slightly weakened, according to the analytical department of the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders, citing the results of weekly monitoring of procurement prices.

After a five-week price plateau at the end of the year, the first January auctions ended with a decline in procurement prices for live pigs. This week, most marketable batches are being purchased within the range of UAH 65–68/kg, while the weighted average price stood at UAH 66.1/kg. This is 5.9%, or UAH 4.2/kg, lower than last week’s level.

Representatives of the meat processing sector mainly attribute the negative price dynamics to a supply of live pigs that slightly exceeds current demand, including due to higher slaughter weights of animals. In particular, some operators reduced purchase volumes in previous weeks because of a shortened working schedule, as a result of which a number of pork producers did not manage to sell all the volumes they had planned during the holiday period.

At present, most buyers are not ready to provide forecasts for the upcoming trading sessions and are taking a wait-and-see approach. At the same time, they plan to work with standard volumes of live pigs, and some expect stabilization of end-product sales after the winter holidays conclude. Although there are currently no grounds for a positive price rebound, further declines in procurement prices are also largely not anticipated.
